Walking Holiday
- The village of Casarabonela sits at 500m above sea level, nestled into the natural park of Sierra de las Nieves. Behind the village is the peak of Prieta at 1521m. There are easy walks around the village with breathtaking views. Further into the Sierra de las Nieves lies the peak of el Torecilla at 1919m, often covered in winter snow and effectively giving the region its name.
- There are several walks in the natural park and these often follow the old herding routes between towns.
- We can offer accompanied walks, normally 3 to 4 hours. These require a general level of fitness and the correct walking attire. These walks are from € 20 per person.
- Alternatively, we offer advice if you wish to explore the region by yourself.
- The beauty of this region though, is that it is hardly known and therefore almost always empty. Walk for hours without seeing a soul. Hard to believe when you are less than an hour from the Costa del Sol.
- The villages of the Sierra de las Nieves are the traditional white washed “pueblos blancos” and each one has it’s own character and individual charm. The “fuentes” or water fountains play an important part in this region and provide an ideal thirst quencher after a walk. Many are supplied by natural mountain springs.
- The flora and fauna in this region provide a wide variety that may surprise many people who are unaware of this region. It may seem almost alpine in some cases and indeed the winter may bring a downpour of snow to even the lower lying villages.
- If fresh air and breathtaking scenery is your idea of a holiday, then the Sierra de las Nieves should not disappoint.
